Job Responsibilities


Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public, and equipment. Operates small equipment such as a standard dump truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials and debris. Operates power tools to break out sidewalks and curbs for driveway construction and other concrete or asphalt pavement repair jobs. Trains in the operation of self-propelled steel wheel and pneumatic roller, to compact and solidify fill material. Removes litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and right-of-ways. Performs manual labor as necessary in the maintaining the grounds of SCDOT facilities, including the installation and maintenance of landscaping. Assists with emergency and inclement weather operations, may include extended hours and/or 12 hour shifts.

Minimum and Additional Requirements


There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work hours outside the normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental related emergencies.
