We are seeking a shop-based mechanic who thrives on diagnosing complex systems and turning worn equipment into reliable performers. If you like structured work with clear quality, cost, and timing targets—and the satisfaction of a flawless test at the end—this role is for you.

Core responsibilities

  • Disassemble, recondition, and reassemble complex Tennant machines using independent judgment.
  • Complete teardowns and full rebuilds on a range of used Tennant equipment.
  • Develop product mastery through self-study, hands-on learning, and Shop Supervisor coaching.
  • Contribute across all phases of the reconditioning workflow.
  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues; service battery, air- and water‑cooled combustion engines; resolve diesel/gas/LP engine problems.
  • Safeguard, maintain, and properly report usage of Tennant Company tools and assets.
  • Deliver on-time work while ensuring each machine meets quality and cost objectives.
  • Execute in‑process quality checks and communicate outcomes.
  • Recognize, document, and escalate safety concerns promptly.
  • Adjust and fine‑tune systems to achieve final quality standards.
  • Apply 5S and housekeeping practices to sustain a clean, safe, organized department.
  • Identify and submit continuous improvement ideas through the tier process.
  • Operate competently across multiple sub‑assembly operations and short‑cycle mainline stations.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and care of company equipment.
  • Demonstrate punctuality and reliable transportation to and from work.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • 3+ years of mobile equipment troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair.
  • Works effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Competent with hand/power tools, shop equipment, and diagnostic instruments.
  • Familiarity with mechanical and electrical assembly concepts and procedures.
  • Demonstrated continuous improvement mindset; manufacturing background preferred.

Physical requirements

  • Lift up to 40 lbs routinely; occasionally up to 90 lbs (assistance provided over 60 lbs).
  • Rotate through multiple positions during a shift.
  • Regular sitting, standing, twisting, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, or squatting (up to 30% of day).
  • Medically capable of safely performing all job functions.

Work environment

  • Proximity to moving mechanical parts.
  • Occasional heat and non‑toxic fumes.
  • Moderate noise.
  • Occasional exposure to oil, grease, gasoline, dust, metal particles, and sharp‑edged materials.
