Job Description

Department: Community Development Division: Building Inspection Pay Range: 55,241 - $66,289 (DOE) GENERAL PURPOSE Performs a variety of entry level para-professional and technical duties to ensure compliance with city, county, state, and federal building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical codes, and ordinances. Conducts inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the general supervision of the Building Official or Building Inspector II during training on a project-by-project basis. SUPERVISION EXERCISED None. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Visits building sites or existing structures to perform inspections including zoning, yard location, footing, foundation, framing, wiring, plumbing, and heating to ensure compliance with building codes and ordinances. Interprets regulations and codes for builders and property owners, assisting them in complying with established standards. Investigates alleged code violations, determines if a violation exists, informs owners/workers of violations, serves correction notices, and prepares inspection certification. Examines damaged buildings to assess structural safety for occupancy or reuse. Maintains files of inspection checks, work notices, researches specific problems, suggests solutions, and follows up on written agreements with property owners, developers, and contractors. Discusses proposed changes in ordinances and codes with supervisors; accurately interprets and communicates these to the public; provides input on code changes; reviews and studies uniform codes to stay current. Performs related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: High school graduation. Two (2) years of responsible experience in the building trades. Equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of construction methods and materials used in commercial, industrial, and residential projects. Understanding of basic engineering standards and codes. Knowledge of political, legal, and governmental processes affecting building programs and project management. Familiarity with building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and energy conservation codes. Understanding of modern construction practices, materials, tools, and equipment. Basic drafting skills, reading blueprints, and specifications. Interpersonal and communication skills. Special Qualifications: Valid Utah Driver's License. Certification as an I.R.C./I.C.C. 2-way inspector in at least two areas, including one in building, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical inspection. Work Environment: Physical activities include walking, standing, stooping, climbing, sitting, and reaching. Effective communication through talking, hearing, and seeing is essential. Requires mental focus, memory, emotional stability, and discriminating thinking. Frequent travel is required. As per Washington City policy, a background check and drug screening are required prior to employment. If under 18, parental or guardian permission is also required.
