Summary

Barry University's Center for Academic Success and Advising is currently seeking an Academic Success Coach.

The Academic Success Coach works with undergraduate faculty, the Director of the Center for Academic Success and Advising and CASA staff to facilitate and support the curricular and co-curricular development and retention of Barry University first-year students. The Academic Success Coach identifies academic support services and workshops and provides individual and small group consultative and coaching services designed to assist first-year students with developing and implementing skills and strategies to succeed academically. Additionally, the Academic Success Coach serves as the academic advisor for undergraduate students during their first-year.

Essential Functions
  • Serve as the academic coach to 40-60 first-year students and meet with students on an ongoing basis.
  • Identify and/or provide high-quality academic support services to students, including education regarding time management and organizational skills, study skills, and assistance with task analysis.
  • Develop an individual Academic Learning Plan (ALP) for each student.
  • Provide regular and individual support for students through
    a. Reinforcement study, planning, and organization skills
    b. Identification of strengths and weaknesses
    c. Explanations of academic policies and concepts
    d. Regular and intentional guidance toward improved performance
  • Assist students with establishing schedules for completion of academic work, and balancing academic responsibilities/requirements with extracurricular activities. Meet with students to establish these schedules, with periodic follow-up to ensure utilization and progress toward goals.
  • Assist students in becoming aware of and making use of campus and community resources, student services, and special programming such as academic tutoring, advising, career services, counseling, disability services, financial aid, and student life services.
  • Maintain currency on student success and academic coaching by attending meetings and professional development events and reading various materials.

Academic Advising
  • Serve as the academic advisor to 40-60 first-year students and meet with students on an ongoing basis, check their mid-term and final grades, and create academic plans to ensure their success.
  • Provide confidential academic advising, in accordance with University policies and procedures regarding academic advising, to ensure that students receive the individual attention they need to succeed.
  • Implement effective and differentiated advising strategies to meet individual students' needs.
  • Provide academic advising to students individually and in groups regarding core and/or departmental requirements, academic policies and procedures.
  • Interpret assessment scores and place students into correct courses for selected program of study.
  • Engage in initial career planning process by explaining the connection between majors, interests/abilities and career goals.
  • Maintain advising records and confidential student records.
  • Assist with academic advising at student-related events.
  • Maintain currency on advising information by attending meetings and professional development events and reading various materials.

Ongoing Progress Monitoring and Data Tracking and Analysis
  • Meet individually with students to track their academic progress and support services; work with students to develop skills such as organization, time management, and effective study habits.
  • Assist in the establishment and maintenance of effective systems for monitoring and assessing service quality and outcomes.
  • Document, track, and monitor student academic progress, enrollment, participation, and outcomes; serve as a referral resource to various support services on campus, and record academic outcomes in University databases.
  • Prepare required reports as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Director of the Center for Academic Success and Advising and CASA staff regarding data analysis to provide records and reports on activities and effectiveness of programming.

Academic Support Services Programming
  • Develop and conduct workshops and small group activities on issues of academic success and design program materials.
  • Provide supportive and consultative services to professional staff, faculty, and students regarding the academic functioning of first-year students.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments, staff and faculty in first-year advising programs and projects.
  • Assist in implementing University-wide retention strategies.
  • Assist in the preparation of a variety of departmental publications.
  • Contribute to the development of strategies, systems, and reports for retention efforts of current students.
  • Work independently and efficiently with a minimum amount of direct supervision on specific programs or projects assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of the Center for Academic Success and Advising.

The person in this position is a key member of the Center for Academic Success and Advising at Barry University and reports to the CASA Director. The individual serving in this position, in keeping with the latest research on student success, academic advising, and retention would surround freshmen with regular, personalized, customized academic support in the first-year through the reinforcement of study, planning, and organization skills, the identification of strengths and weaknesses, regular and intentional guidance toward improved performance, and assistance with establishing schedules for completion of academic work, and balancing academic responsibilities/requirements with extracurricular activities. The Academic Success Coach must develop positive, warm, and nurturing relationships with their students to promote productive coach-student/advisor-advisee relationships, facilitate student success, and foster the mission of the University.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree is required in Education, Student Affairs/Services, Liberal Arts, Business, Social Work, Psychology, or other related field
  • Master's degree is preferred in Education, Higher Education, Education Leadership, Student Affairs/Services, Business, Business Administration, Social Work, or other related field
  • 1-3 years of work-related experience is required
  • 3-5 years of experience in academic advising, career services, admissions and recruitment, or other related positions in higher education to substitute for a Master's Degree or substitute for a Bachelor's degree in an unrelated field.
  • Intermediate Analytical, project/process management, and computer skills are required
  • Advanced written and oral communication skills required

Working collaboratively with department and university administration, faculty, staff, and students to serve one another within the Barry community and to support others as they serve communities outside of Barry
